Port Townsend, Port Hadlock and Chimacum have some wonderful older homes. But many of them still run on electrical panels installed decades ago, long before heat pumps, EV chargers, induction ranges and home offices became normal. Here are the most common signs it's time for an upgrade.
1. Your panel is 30+ years old
Panels and breakers wear out. If your panel is original to a home built before 1990, it's worth having it evaluated.
2. Breakers trip often
Frequent trips can mean overloaded circuits, a failing breaker, or a panel that's simply undersized for your household.
3. Lights dim when appliances start
Dimming when the dryer, well pump or microwave kicks on can point to an undersized service or loose connections.
4. Rust, heat or buzzing
Near the water in Port Townsend, Port Ludlow and Marrowstone, salt air corrodes panels. Rust, scorch marks, warmth or a buzzing sound are signs to call an electrician soon.
5. No room for new circuits
If your panel is full of double-stuffed or tandem breakers, or there's no space for that EV charger or heat pump, an upgrade may be the cleanest solution.
6. Your insurer or inspector flagged it
Some older panel brands have documented problems, and many insurers now ask about them. If your home inspector or insurance company raised a concern, take it seriously.
