EV Charger Installation in Jefferson County: What Homeowners Should Know

By Ron Reed ·

More and more peninsula drivers are switching to electric vehicles. With long drives between Port Townsend, Sequim, Poulsbo and the Hood Canal Bridge, reliable home charging makes all the difference. Here's what to know before you install a charger.

Level 1 vs. Level 2

Level 1 charging uses a standard 120V outlet and adds just a few miles of range per hour. Level 2 uses a dedicated 240V circuit and can fully charge most EVs overnight. For most households, Level 2 is the way to go.

Can your panel handle it?

A Level 2 charger is a significant load. Many newer homes have room to spare, but older 100-amp services — common in Port Hadlock, Chimacum and Port Townsend — may need a panel or service upgrade. A load calculation tells us for sure.

Hardwired or plug-in?

Chargers can be hardwired or plugged into a 240V outlet like a NEMA 14-50. Hardwired units are often preferred for outdoor installs and higher power levels. Plug-in setups offer flexibility if you might change chargers later.

Location matters

Think about where you park, cable reach, and whether the charger will be inside a garage or exposed to peninsula weather. We'll help you choose a spot that's convenient and safe.

Permits and inspection

EV charger circuits typically require a Washington State electrical permit and inspection. We handle that as part of the job.
